Sinfonia Ottawa will perform a concert on August 31,
2010 as a fund-raising event for a music school in
Haiti.
Begun in 1998, Sinfonia Ottawa performs just one concert each year. Members are a mixture of advanced students, serious amateur players and professional musicians, conducted by Janos Csaba. Their concerts are presented each year at this time, a welcome diversion for music lovers who are feeling the letdown after the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and awaiting the beginning of the new season. Janos Csaba is a former violist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, from its formation in 1969 until his retirement in 2003. He has been conducting the orchestra for the last six summers. The concert will feature Ottawa violist Kevin James performing a work by Montreal composer Peter Willsher. Other works are by Geminiani, Mozart and Grieg. The proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Vision Nouvelle Music School. This church-affiliated school in Delmas, Haiti offers enriched music instruction to children of all income levels. The school itself was left in rubble after this spring’s earthquake, but continues to provide its education while rebuilding. The music program is funded and organized by Ottawa violinist and music teacher Yvrose Philippe-Auguste, who comes from Haiti and also runs a summer music camp for Haitian children in Ottawa every year. The Sinfonia Ottawa performance takes place on August 31, 7:30 p.m., St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 82 Kent Street. Tickets are $20.00 for adults, $15.00 for students, and are available in advance at The Leading Note, Collected Works, and Compact Music.
