The Casals Festival was founded in 1957 in San Juan, where Pablo Casals had retired. For four years I was the Principal Second violinist of the Casals Festival Orchestra under the direction of Pablo Casals, Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, and Zubin Mehta. Alexander Schneider, one of the energetic figures in musical life, was directly involved in organizing this festival and brought musicians in from New York City.
Schneider was best known as first violinist for the famed Budapest Quartet.
